Sometimes, the error messages that we get are absolutely misleading. This is one of those cases where you get called to a server for a mail problem and end up wasting a couple of hours on a problem that could have taken mere minutes to fix.
The symptoms are pretty simple. In this case, the customer is using the POP3 Connector and is no longer receiving emails. This problem can occur in a number of scenarios with the same fix. the event log shows this error:
An error occurred while delivering mail to ‘someguy@someplace.com’ on the SMTP server ‘localhost’. The error code was 0x800ccc6c. Verify that the mailbox exists and that the Exchange receive connectors are configured properly.
I’ve had this problem but with different event logs as well, so if you are getting some weird things, this is definitely something to look into before you so do anything else. Both times, the problem was low disk space on the system partition.
That’s right! low disk space. First time I came across this problem, the server had about 55mb left so it was a no brainer. But this time, there was 1.86GB left so I figured I’d free up some space after I had resolved the email problem. It turns out that there should always be at least 2GB of free space for exchange to work properly.
I started to move a 14gb folder (using Teracopy of course..) to another partition and, magically, emails started pouring in after a few minutes.
Thanks for the post, been battling for 2 days… Moved the exchange databases to a bigger drive with more available space! Worked like a charm!!!!
Always a pleasure to help someone save some time!

You’re a true heroe to me!! Thank you very much.
thanks Pascal. I knew this as i’ve seen this before on a clients xch 07 server. but went blank on my own server! so many other sites went off in the wrong direction.
I found the same thing with my SBS. I found the logs for WSUS were at 15-GB. Found a post by Susan Bradley to disable WSUS logging:
http://blogs.technet.com/b/sbs/archive/2010/03/02/recovering-disk-space-on-the-c-drive-in-small-business-server-2008.aspx
solved!
Wow – Disk space is usually the first thing I check but I had almost 2GB free so I thought I was fine. I was obviously wrong. Thanks so much for this post Pascal!
Thank you so much
Spend hours on this
It worked
and I had like 3.5GB free
Thanks again
cheers matt
hehe!….only took me 2 days…and 10 mins after I found this post.
Thanks.
The obvious is very often the best answer!
I lost my email for Outlook. I did a scan and no worms, etc detected. What do I do now?
Thanks! This works. I allready had over 1 GB of free space, that´s why I never thought of an free space issue.
Thanks!!! Problem solved :D

I lost two days finding a solution and here it is. I had 8.5GB free space on drive C: and it seems like it was not enough for a connector, so I moved ~4 GB of data to another drive and it started to work again.
Error 0x800CCC6C SMTP 452 NO SYSTEM STORAGE – No space to store messages says
I would never think, that 8.5 GB is just not enough.
Same issue for me but I had 14 gigs of free space……. Would think this is plenty!! Moved some files off got it up to 19gigs of free space and the connector started working again.
Thanks,
When I done a search on the error code you page came up, saved me some time.
GREAT!!!! Saved me lots of time
Thanks:-)
Thanks also from me. I had the same problem on SBS2011.
I’m experiencing the same problem on SBS 2008… BUT.,.. My system drive has 14.7GB free and my datastore lies on a volume that has 384GB free space…
I have found that an interim (very short-term) fix was to restart the PoP connector service and mail starts flowing again for a while
Any ideas
